The Color of Worship

The Color of Worship
The Color of Worship

This work was inspired by a sermon series preached by my pastor a couple of years ago. The series was titled "Is God a Segregationist?" The answer, of course, is a resounding NO!

The various shades of brown, which are prominent at the bottom of this piece, are symbolic of the many different races, all created by God. The bright colors symbolize the beauty and joy of praising God together with our brothers and sisters in Christ.

As your eye moves upward through this piece, you will notice that the shades of brown become less prominent, and the bright colors become dominant. Just so, as we concentrate more on God, as our praise rises heavenward, racial differences become less important. They don't disappear, they just cease to be as important as worshipping God together.

This is how it should be. Sadly, it is all too rare to find a church where this is a reality. Though, for the most part, we are no longer racially segregated in school, in the workplace, or in the marketplace, the church remains largely segregated. The church should have led the way in breaking down racial barriers. Instead, it has lagged behind.

I am thrilled to say that the sermon series to which I referred in the opening paragraph of this post did more than inspire this work of art. It was a turning point for our church. It excites me to say that if  you come to my church, you will see people of different races coming together to worship, bound together by our love for Christ. Through the work of the Holy Spirit, our slogan, "All Races United in Christ," is becoming more than a slogan. It is becoming a reality.
